7 Easy Ways to Make Gold in World of Warcraft While Leveling

Article by Nerdgrrl

“Can sum1 giv me a gold?”

It’s a phrase that is pretty common in World of Warcraft, and everyone finds it annoying. I always wonder how people can really be broke and desperate enough to beg when this game offers so many opportunities to make gold. You don’t have to beg, cheat, or spend more of your real, hard-earned cash to do it. Best of all, you don’t even have to wait until you’re 85 if you just follow these 7 basic tips to making WoW Gold While Leveling.

1. Turn Trash into Cash

The easiest way to make gold in World of Warcraft while leveling is one that everyone tends to ignore: Trash. You know, those little gray and white items you pick up from mobs you’ve killed. The money may seem miniscule, but when you think about the thousands of enemies you kill between a few levels this can add up fast. In fact, I would say that just turning on Auto-Loot and selling all of your trash to vendors will at least cover all of your training expenses while leveling. Also, pay close attention to the white items that aren’t armor pieces. A lot of times you will find whites that are ingredients needed for recipes and can be sold for decent amounts on the action house. For example, Large Fangs drop pretty frequently from beasts between levels 20-50 and usually sell for a few gold.

2. Hold On to Your Cloth

This is a whole category of white items that can bring in nice gold, so make sure you loot every piece of cloth that drops. If you aren’t going to be doing the Tailoring, First Aid, or Engineering professions, put all of it in the auction house once you have collected a stack, or 20 pieces. The one that will probably yield the most at low levels is Wool cloth, which drops from level 18-30 humanoids. When you are around those levels try to quest in areas where humanoids are abundant.

3. Don’t Vendor Greens

Sometimes you will pick up green armor or weapons items that aren’t useful to you, but you should almost NEVER sell these to merchants with your other trash. Even those pathetic ones that are labeled things like “of the Boar” can be valuable to Enchanters, so make sure you put every green you can’t use in the auction house. You’ll be surprised what some of these actually sell for, and the gold will start adding up fast.

4. Double Your Gathering

As soon as you are able, learn two gathering skills. These are: Enchanting, Mining, Skinning, and Herbalism. Which ones should you choose? Well, that’s up to you, but I have a system for selection that is pretty efficient. Usually, I will decide what main profession I want the character to have at end game, and my first profession will be the gathering skill that goes with it. The second gathering skill I choose will be the one that has the most potential for profit. Determining this will take a little auction house research for your server, but Mining has been my go-to skill for a while.

5. Try Fishing

It’s one of the least popular professions in the game because of the excessive amount of time it takes to cap, but it can actually make you a small bit of gold without too much effort. There are a few types of low level fish that are valuable to people doing the Cooking and Alchemy professions. For example, Deviate Fish are used in the recipe Savory Deviate Delight. This recipe is pretty popular at all levels because of the costume you get after consumption. If you’re a horde character it’s quite easy to farm them in Wailing Caverns once you’ve gotten your fishing skill to 100. For alliance, the trek here is probably not worth it, but if you’re bored you’ll make a bit more because of rarity.

6. Sign Guild Charters

In order to start guilds, a certain number of unique, guildless players must sign a charter. Potential guild masters want to gain these signatures as fast as possible and are often desperate enough to offer payment. You’ll see them advertising in trade chat all the time. I’ve made anywhere between 1-100g per signature. I’ll usually keep my characters guildless until level 40 for this alone. Keeping a character guildless for too long isn’t ideal with the new reputation system, but you can still do this for a while without much loss.

7. Never Buy Anything

Once you make money, don’t waste it. Since patch 3.0 there really has been no reason for you to buy anything from the auction house, except maybe a few things required for recipes. With the dungeon finder, you should be able to stay in a full set of blue gear, at all times, at no cost to you. If you need enchants, don’t buy the scrolls. Instead, when you’re in a dungeon with an enchanter, make sure to always hit the “disenchant” option on rolls. Collect the materials and then look for an Enchanter in trade chat. Doing this, you can obtain enchants worth 100s for the price of a tip. If you need bags, put some of that cloth you collect to the side and find a Tailor to make them. Don’t buy anything unless you have completely run out of options.

Don’t be a whiny beggar in World of Warcraft. As I’ve shown you, there are lots of ways to make and save gold at low levels. Most of these don’t even require much effort or going out of your way while questing. There are probably even tons more ways I haven’t listed. Just stay active and I’m sure you’ll find a routine that works best for you. If you’re still having trouble, ask a guildmate or check out these pages for more tips:
