The game Warcraft had already had three previous instalments prior to the release of an online version in the early part of the 21st century.World of Warcraft was different from its predecessors because it was not a standalone computer game for the solo player but was an online platform designed to accommodate millions. Now that Azeroth (the gaming world where all the action takes place) exists as a virtual world beyond the control of your own individual personal computer hordes of players can enter the same gaming environment and interact with each other in ways that were not possible with the previous titles.

The outlandish success of WoW was never seen before its release and has never been seen since. It took the entire industry by surprise due to the speed of its success.

Upon World of Warcraft’s release it was an instant hit. Within just 3 years it had amassed a huge 8,000,000 players and grabbed a massive fifty percent market share for that gaming genre. By 2010 this number has reached 11 million and is staying steady.

When Blizzard released the online version of their Warcraft series no-one contemplated just how successful it would be or just how many industry records it would break. Even Blizzard was shocked. Warcraft is now in the annals of history.
