The Archeology Profession in World of Warcraft

Article by Shawn Manaher

The World of Warcraft Cataclysm expansion has introduced a new secondary profession known as Archeology. This new profession allows players to research some of the unknown tales of the world of Azeroth, giving subtle hints towards the massive history of Warcraft while also allowing them to find new armorers, weapons, and even pets. This archeology leveling guide to bring you all the way to a status of Grand Master at 525; and although this is not as expensive a profession as others, specifically Engineering and Enchanting, it will take you quite a while to play through. It is somewhat similar to the other secondary profession of Fishing, as it takes much persistence and dedication to see all the way through.

As with the other professions in the game, you need to start by finding a professional trainer, one of which is located in any capital city. One of the unique points of this profession is that you must be at least at level twenty before you can start; the reason for this is that you cannot ride animals until you are at level twenty, and this will make it much easier for you to travel across the world. You are going to receive two skills when you begin training, Archeology and Surveying. The only one you are going to need as you begin your exploring at first is Surveying.

Now, check the world map to see where you can go to receive these surveying rewards. Any archeology leveling guide will probably say that you won’t want to go to areas that are marked with a shovel, though it is quickly becoming apparent that people are preferring to take their times with it instead. It takes some dexterity and work to get to all the different areas you need to do for the archeology profession, and this can make it difficult to follow any chain of quests you are on. It does, on the other hand, allow you to find other items for other professions along the way, whether they be herbs, ores, or other items.

There are a total of four different areas on each continent where you can take, and you can take advantage of each of them three times. Don’t actually do any puzzle solving with the artifacts until you’re at level fifty, however, so that you can continue to level up with them. Once you hit level fifty, you can use the surveying profession to solve these artifacts and then continued to build your levels. From there, the only way you can continue to increase your skills is to solve the puzzles. For each artifact you salt, you’re going to gain five levels, and the artifact itself is worth a lot of money. Just be aware that these archeology rewards are not going to be enough to keep you safe if you travel to a too difficult area — in Outland, you see, the levels of monsters are high enough that you need to be very strong before you go there.

One of the many rewards you can receive are different WoW armor sets. Many of these will only be usable once you get to level fifty. Some of them are truly worth their weight in WoW gold.
